Welcome to Fort Portal, Uganda’s “Tourism City” and a gateway to the Tooro Kingdom. Whether you’re here to explore the region’s famous crater lakes, immerse yourself in cultural experiences, or embark on a safari in the nearby national parks, this information pack will help you make the most of your visit.
1. Getting Here
By Road
Fort Portal is located in western Uganda, about 300 km from Kampala (a 4–5 hour drive via the Kampala–Mubende–Fort Portal highway). Private taxis, minibuses (matatus), and ride-sharing services from Kampala are widely available.
By Air
Currently, Fort Portal does not have a major commercial airport. Most travellers fly into Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and then travel by road to Fort Portal. Charter flights to Kasese Airstrip (about 1.5 hours away) are also an option for those seeking quicker access.
Public Transport
Buses and 14-seater minibuses run daily from Kampala’s bus stations. Check local operators’ schedules for departure times.
Link Bus Services: One of the most established companies operating between Kampala and Fort Portal. Often departs from the Link Bus Terminal in the Kisenyi area of Kampala.
Kalita Bus: Provides daily services to various western Uganda towns, including Fort Portal. Typically departs from Kisenyi Bus Terminal as well.
Post Bus: Operated by Uganda Post Limited (Posta Uganda). Known for relatively punctual departure times; however, routes and schedules are best confirmed in advance at the main Post Office or through their official contact.
2. Visa & Travel Documents
Visa Requirements
Most international visitors need a visa to enter Uganda. You can apply in advance via the Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit System or at Entebbe Airport upon arrival (depending on nationality).
Passport Validity
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months before arrival.
Yellow Fever Certificate
A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is typically required upon entry. Consult Uganda Immigration for up-to-date regulations.
3. Currency & Money Matters
Ugandan Shilling (UGX)
Uganda’s official currency is the Ugandan Shilling, though US Dollars may be accepted in some tourist-centric locations.
ATMs & Banks
Major towns like Fort Portal have banks (e.g., Stanbic Bank, Centenary Bank) with ATMs accepting international Visa or MasterCard. Check for transaction fees.
Currency Exchange
Forex bureaus and banks offer currency exchange services. Exchange rates vary, so compare a few spots for the best deal.
4. Climate & Clothing
Weather
Fort Portal has a mild, subtropical climate influenced by its elevation (over 1,500 meters). Daytime temperatures typically range from 20°C to 27°C (68°F to 81°F). Rainfall can be frequent, especially from March to May and September to November.
What to Pack
Bring light layers, a rain jacket, and comfortable shoes for trekking or nature walks. Evenings can be cool, so a light sweater is useful.
5. Health & Safety
Vaccinations & Health
In addition to Yellow Fever, consider vaccines for Hepatitis A/B and Typhoid. Malaria prophylaxis is also recommended. Consult your doctor or visit Travel Health Pro for current guidelines.
Drinkable Water
Stick to bottled or boiled water. Many accommodations provide filtered drinking water; confirm if unsure.
General Safety
Fort Portal is generally considered safe, but exercise standard precautions—watch personal belongings, use reputable transport at night, and avoid unlit areas.
6. Local Transport & Getting Around
Boda-Bodas (Motorcycle Taxis)
Widely used for short distances or navigating narrower roads. Always wear a helmet and use licensed operators where possible.
Private Taxis & Car Rentals
Ideal for day trips to crater lakes, national parks, or tea plantations. Negotiate fares beforehand or use recognized service providers.
Tour Operators
For guided excursions or multi-day packages, consider local experts (e.g., Blissful Tours & Travel, Kabarole Tours) who know the region well.
7. Language & Culture
English & Rutooro
English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas and by younger Ugandans. Rutooro is the primary local language. Learning a few phrases can enhance your cultural experience.
